Have your away message on without having the away sign by your screen name
1.) Go to "My AIM" which is on your buddylist menu at the top. Then go "Edit Options" and from there "Edit Preferences."
2.) Now select the "Idle Message" category which is in the categoty list on the left side.
3.) Check the box next to where it says "When Idle auto respond with:."
4.) GO ahead and enter the away message you want users to see while you're away.
Unfortunately, this message will only take effect after you being idle for about 10 or 20 minutes, I'm unsure which one it is. The posotive side to this though is that they cannot see the away message (
) sign by your screen name and you can always know what's on their mind because they'll IM you as if you aren't away.
